Changing your smile

Changing your smile

If you are not satisfied with the smile you were dealt, then you can change it. Modern dentistry can change the colour, shape, size and arrangement of your teeth. (To ensure this is in a good way don’t annoy your dentist before treatment)

I have rare moments of tact (not often you understand) and will often not bring up or recommend aesthetic changes until you mention them first.

Teeth that are becoming yellow (a sign you are getting older and wiser) are relatively easy to lighten with our custom-made trays and whitening gel used at home over two weeks. The aim here is not to have teeth like a movie star, just a bit lighter (and appear cleaner) than they are now.

Grey teeth (from childhood illnesses) can take much longer to treat. Whitening will not change the colour of your fillings so these may become more obvious and need replacing to go with the more smiley you.

Composite facings/veneers

Facings/veneers cover the front surface of your teeth. We can use them to improve colour where bleaching is not an option, change the shape and position of teeth and close gaps.

Composite veneers are shaped directly in the mouth from white filling material. They are painless but do take around 45 minutes per tooth.  They will last about 5 years after which the composite may start to discolour and need touching up or even full replacement.

There is no cutting of the tooth; this means that when we add about 1 mm thickness of white filling material, the teeth will feel fatter. Composite veneers are completely reversible.

If you prefer, you can opt for Porcelain veneers. These have a more translucent colour (look more like real teeth) and will last around 10 years, but are at least twice the price of composite veneers. The front tooth enamel is cut away so when the veneer is placed the finished tooth will be about the same thickness as the original. Porcelain veneers are not reversible. I will refer you to another dentist for this treatment.

There are limits to what we can achieve with composite or porcelain veneers depending on the way your bite comes together, the quality your tooth structure and the thickness of material required. If we cannot achieve what you want there are lots of other options such as orthodontics (braces) at any age, crowns, implants and bridges.

We can create free in-mouth mock ups in about 10 minutes to give you an idea of how the finished product would look. And of course I have handouts on the different procedures, what they involve and costs in time and money.

If you are happy with the smile you were dealt, clean it, floss it, treat it well and smile more. It makes people wonder what you are up to.
